Background of USAP, G!

Urban cities face several environmental concerns, such as poor air and water quality, lack of green spaces, lack of ecological biodiversity, and growing concern for food security. Air pollution was primarily a problem of urban regions in the developed countries. In the past decades, however, changes in the pattern of air pollutant emissions, including increases from motor vehicles, resulted in greater pollutant impacts in more remote rural regions.

With such, the practice of urban agriculture or urban gardening has been increasing in popularity during the past years. As the name suggests, urban gardening is the practice of producing green spaces in urban areas. Interested proponents can do such in or within the vicinity of their homes, thereby attracting them to engage in planting without the need to travel to rural areas or to leave their full-time jobs.

As students in STEM, we have developed a project to be part of the solution to reduce air pollution. The problem of air pollution is relevant to our strand because of its scientific effect on the community. Air pollution is harmful to an individual’s health because it can cause sore throat, coughing, lung inflammation, and permanent lung damage. To handle this issue, we developed a website that focuses on urban planting. Urban gardening is a step to reduce air pollution because leaves hold small dust particles on their surfaces and absorb air pollution. Our website will contain ways and tips to help you begin urban gardening. We will promote urban gardening and its benefits to the community.
